there aren't that many big objects on collision course with Earth - probably none. Plus, anything sufficiently large, if it got to near, would at least be broken up in (large) fragments by tidal forces from th Earth itself.

This being said, in the very early stages of the formation of the Solar System, it seems pretty clear that the Earth was hit by some serious bits and pieces, because its axis of rotation is tilted by about 23 degrees.

As for collisions with "small" objects ie about a mile or a couple of miles across (small compared to the Earth and its 8'000 miles diameter), there have been apparently at least 5 during the history of life on the planet i.e. on average about one every 200 million years. And each of them wiped out between 75 (the latest one) and 90 percent of the species. So collisions DO happen.

THOUSANDS of objects strike Earth daily, but virtually all of them are tiny. Most objects of any size are burned up or broken up during their passage through the Earth's atmosphere. Every few thousand years an object large enough to cause a substantial crater (Meteor Crater, AZ and Tunguska, Siberia are examples) will arrive. Much less frequently a massive object such as the monster at the K-T boundary which caused the 150 mile (or so) crater in northern Yucatan and is blamed for killing the dinosaurs strikes.

Earth is essentially a tiny target in space, and is protected by it's dense atmosphere. We WILL be hit again by a large monster, but it's a rare occurrence, especially as many of the objects have already struck one or another planet, and the remainder are mostly in stable orbits away from Earth

Well we have three things going for us.

1. The Sun, Saturn, and other relatively larger celestrial bodies shield us from collisions. Their field of gravity is much higher they tend to cleanse the area of the solar system around them.

2. Two bicycles being rode by blindfolded drivers in a mall parking lot. They probably won't collide. While millions of millions of things are out there to hit us they usually miss because of the vastness of space.

3. Our atmosphere. The earth's dense atmosphere protects the earth from collision with relatively small objects. They burn up before reaching the earth's surface.

Space is big, REALLY big, and those other objects are all much smaller than Earth. Small rocks hit Earth all the time, you see them as shooting stars. There are not so many bigger rocks. By bigger I mean a hundred feet wide or bigger. Most of the time, the bigger ones just miss Earth. When one does hit, it makes a crater but does not really damage the Earth as a whole. Of course if a 100 foot rock hits your city at 50,000 miles per hour, it will make a crater out of your city and ruin your whole day. But most of the rest of the people on Earth would hardly notice it at all.

1) space is HUGE so chances of object hitting us small
2) Gravity of solar system exerts orbits that keep most things away from us
3) Earth's atmosphere burns up most objects that do come into contact with us due to the friction of transition from vaccum to atmosphere
4) Anything big enough to not burn up in atmosphere tends to get caught up in gravitational field of other planets en route to earth.
5) The Pope's very large hat is an ancient deflector device powered by faith which puts a repulsor beam around Earth to keep away the nasties

The distance between objects in th espace is inconceivably enormous .You know that light is the fastest travelling object in the universe .its speed is around 186000 miles per second . for such a light it wouod tke some millions years to go from one object to another .just imagins the immensity of the space . If you can expect dust flying in your house in Inida to collied with a speck dust flying the house of some friend in America, you can expect some celestial body colliding with the earth to destroy it .
But nature has its own scheme of things to recycle everythihng in ghe universe and it is day and night are eaons .After some eon the sun the stter that is holding the earth and some other planets and some glactic matter aroun dits orbit , will come to a stage on the burnig outof iits fuel and its conversion into a big cloud of gas would grwo in size like the dying flame of a candle or an oil lamb and swallow evry galactic matter situated some light years away from it in its orbit and turn inbtoia red giant and because of this immense additon to its mass by the inclusion of the galactic matter and planets in to its body will grow in gravithy to infinite dimention that even light would not be able to escpae its gravittionals field .They will also undergo a nuclear fussion inside the star without sending out light but cosmic radiation by wihch the presence of the star in that stage could be assessed if thwe couls be anybody in any galaxy outside the field of influence of theis star . But the possibility is a GRANT NIL. After an eon the new solar system would come into existence with new planets which might develop new life in due course repeating the whole porces that the earth has undegone before reaching this stge . This process wil repeat in a cycle . This si science . Saint Vyasa has already predicted this and told it through the lips of KRISHNA in BHAGAVAD GITA . please see the verses below:

"At break of Brahma's day
all things emerge from unmanifest nature,
when night falls , all sink
into unmanifest darkness ( Dark hole)

" Arjuna , the throng of creatures
that comes to exist dissolves
unwillingly at night fall
to emerge again at day break ."

( Now see what the night fall and day break is )

" When they know that a day of Brahma
stretches over a thousand eons ,
and his night endss ina thousand eons ,
men understand day and night "

"Even in Brahma's cosmic realm
worlds evolve in incessant cycles ,
but a man who reaches me
suffers no rebirth , Arjuna ."
This krishna ,inter alia , teaches Arjuna after revealing to him his VISWA ROOPA - THE IMAGE OF THE UNIVERSE to him as the real form of God in Totality - a being of Non-being ,he callas himself and speaks of the wonderful space -the void a "NOTHING '; that is everything . too subtle to understand by the huaman mind . a thing that does not act but makes everything act . that spins evrything in the universe but stands aloof immoveably and inconceivably . It is indivisible , but things stnd divided in it . It does nt move , but things can not move without it .What a cobination of contradictory qualities in one and the same thing of "NOTHING"
