Exagerating the feminity, over-the-top dress and make up, and their voice. Those are the big things to watch out for.

Trying to act and look like an exaggerated image of what they think women are.

Now if you are preforming Drag, then then you are going to dress differently, but an every day transvestite who wants to pass isn't going to dress in sequins and high hair.

Btw, a crossdresser is a man who during puberty starts wearing woman's clothing and has a sexual response to it. A transvestite is a man who usually starts wearing women's clothing as a child, does not get a sexual thrill out of it and the most common thought is that its comforting or simply makes them feel good.

Most crossdressers aren't trying to pass. Transvestites however many times in adult hood will spend a great deal of time in women's clothing and passing is important.

Don't get your makeup and hair ideas from Vogue, get Good Housekeeping. That's what most women look like.

Study women, do they really speak and act like you are trying to? If you are 17, they just might, but not a woman of 35. Be age appropriate.

Again, the exaggeration of the feminine is always a mistake, if you are trying to truly pass. However don't go for dowdy, that doesn't look good on anyone. Newport News is the best resource for inexpensive up to date clothing in a variety of sizes.

There are lots of problems facing the man wanting to pass.
These range from finding normal shoes that fit to losing heavy beards and dealing with bald patches.
Hands are often a give-away, as are forearms, many serious T's take voice training lessons to raise pitch.
The other great give-away is that T-s don't have cellulitis. Ha ha.

"Crossdressers" is a really broad term. Within that exists Transgenders, Transvestites and Drag Queens.

I assume, by the nature of your question you mean trannies of one sort or another.

I would have to say that it's because they usually wear too much make-up..have really obvious Adam's Apples and their hands and feet are simply dead give aways.
But, hey, if they're comfortable then kudos to them!

I don't think there is any one mistake, or any one good thing....it is a collection of working with what you have to be what you want. The mistakes I have seen with many Cross Dressers is NOT ENOUGH...in effort to be "real," they insist on very light makeup, very real-girl clothes..and on many men, it just will never work. But, with some, men who are smaller, who know what is needed to do the job, the presentation can be downright remarkable. Good luck

Man dressing like woman, or woman dressing like man? For the men dressing as women: 1.) need to be comfortable in heels, or it's a dead giveaway without even seeing the face 2.) use tasteful makeup 3.) using exaggerated gesticulations, like walking with way more switch than a real woman. I have never seen (unless I didn't realize it) a woman dressing as a man. I just see them dress butchy, but not as a man.

there are a couple. Having your skirt or shorts too high or tight, revealing the fact that he is a cross-dresser, and in my opinion, I think having on a truck load of make-up, I think lots of pounds of make-up make you look obvious, but then again some gentic women do this, but they still get stares, but either way, your bringing more attention to yourself in an unwanted way, so that is bad

I'd say going over the top in dressing, for many they don't look like a woman, they look like a parody of a woman, or in other cases a hooker.
They try to be too elaborate.

assuming you have your style right for the occasion, the the biggest thing i think is the mindset. if you go out and think you are going to be read and act scared and stuff then you are going to have a difficult time passing.

it's a lot of little things. Beard cover, walk, over dressing, dressing for the body they wish they had not for the body they have.

Not that i've paid any attention to that type of thing.
