He might have "had girlfriends in the past" - but then so did Morrissey, Michael Stipe, even Elton John, before they accepted their sexuality.
Based on certain songs and interview statements (he's stopped denying it and started saying, in so many words, "would it really matter if I am?") - I think he is, and if he's still feeling guilty about it at least he's more at ease with it than he used to be.
