A performer such as a singer or dancer will only get benefits if s/he works for an employer. Even then, not all employers offer the full array of benefits, such as health insurance, vacations, holidays, pension plans/401(k), etc.

An actor in a movie is an independent contractor and is responsible for all of his/her own expenses, including paying Social Security and health insurance. If you get $10 million per film, this is not a big deal. If you're in an indie film and getting $10,000, it's pretty meager earnings if that is your only role that year. It's easy to skip the medical insurance and 401(k) payments. The same is true for models, dancers, singers, and so forth.

If you are a dancer or actor in a theater company and your injury is work-related (a dancer sprains an ankle on stage), then the producer is responsible for the medical bills and will probably cover your pay. If you belong to a union, you will get a pension of some sort and may have access to reduced-cost health insurance. But it won't be free.

typically backup singers, models, dancers get what they want the most... exposure. There are monetary benefits, gift bags, parties with the stars but unless they stick with a big name star as part of their "posse" it is a very tough life financially. As for insurance.. there is insurance on the sets but personal insurance, such as life and medical, is not normally provided longterm.

During the emmy's or some award show they mentioned the actor's guild, some type of union for entertainers. Anyways... with all that [A$#, who cares?

Unless they are under contract with a certain co. they get no benefits, they pay for them out of pocket.
