Our lodge is having an outing, we're getting a bushel of quahogs to make chowder, just need to know how many are in the bushel so I can multiply the recipe! Thanks!

Hmmm....clams and quahogs are two different types of shellfish. Quahogs have the hard shell and are on the round side, while clams have a soft shell and are oval shapped, like the shape of the dark colored shell that mussels have, but clams have a white/greyish shell.

As for how many are in a bushel...quite a lot. You would probably only need a 1/3 of a bushel to make enough chowder for about ten to twelve servings. My guess. Heck, the more meat, the better, but you can always thin it out with cream, potatoes, onions or even crispy bacon, but don't add too much bacon, just enough.

See how many lbs. or cups you'll need for your recipe and then ask the person you're buying them from how many shellfish you'll need to make a cup or a pound. Remember once they're cooked and then chopped/grinded, you'll need quite a few to make a cup of pure shellfish meat.

Sounds yummy.....can I come? LOL

You will need to call the seafood market you plan on buying from and ask them how many per bushel for that day. It can vary by quite a bit. Tell them to save you as many bushels as you need and that way you can get them at the last minute so they are fresh

ask the person you are buying the clams from. They should know based on the average size of the clams they sell.
