My tomatoes are just turning red and the skins are cracking, why? I have been watering them and they have sun. Any ideas? Thank you for your time.

The skin of tomato grows at a different rate than the inside. If the tomatoes get excessive water the inside grows too fast for the skin, resulting in the cracked skin. This is more pronounced when there is heavy rain following a prolonged period of hot dry weather.
While the problem can't be completely resolved, there is one trick which helps to reduce the cracking. When you first plant the tomatoes you should water the heavily for several days. This tricks the plant into "thinking" it's a wet climate and will 'allow' the skin to expand a little further.
This requires some trial and error because if you over do it with the watering the cracks will appear earlier.

If tomatoes experience excessive water and/or drought, it can affect the texture of the skin. Often when there is a heavy rain tomatoes will soak up tons of water, and that can lead to split skins...especially if followed by drought.

Too much extreme weather. Here in CT, we had a ton of rain, then a lot of sun, then too much rain again. And all my tomatoes have cracked skins! I use those tomatoes for sauce.

back off the watering , particularly if the fruit has developed , don't worry if the plant looks a bit dead -- after all you only want the tomatoes , and let a couple fall off the vine as they will self seed next season . good luck .
