She has repeatedly called me a wimp and refers to herself as "the leader" of the office and belittles any ideas that I have. Last week, I offered an idea and she responded by saying "shut up or i'll show you my kung fu grip". To make matters worse, her husband works in the same building. I have started to take kickboxing lessons and am seriously thinking about challeging her to a fight once I feel ready. Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.

Get a new job. Hit the job sites at night after work. Give plenty of notice and all that.

Once you get your new job:

1) Report her cruelty to animals to the proper authorities. I think prairie dogs are endangered now - right?

2) Continue your kick boxing for at least a year or so before you think about challenging her to a fight. What arts are her black belts in? Are they good arts? Does she keep in shape and practice regularly? Ask around. If the arts arn't that good then take her on. If the arts are good then I'd say let sleeping dogs lie a while until you are comparable.

You have some very good responses here. You can make an argument for the instructor or against the instructor. Therefore, my response is both for and against the black belt. You are learning karate not table tennis. You should expect some contact. Sometimes the contact will be harder than others. Especially as you grow in rank and skill. Our school trains in shorin ryu and jujitsu. Our style is a hard style. We have a saying in our class. If you can take what is done in here there is nothing that hurt you on the streets. But I will also say that we don't hit or allow our white belts to be hit as hard as a student of a higher rank. We also have a rule in our class. Remember that you are working with a partner. Remember that your partner gets a turn too. If you are out of control with your punches or kicks the second person get a turn too and can return the favor. I wouldn't advise you to do that with this black belt. On the other side he was wrong. He should have acknowledge that you at this point aren't able to handle that amount of contact yet. He should have never kicked you hard or soft as a form of discipline. That is unacceptable. I know there are always 3 sides to every story. There is your side, his side, and the truth. I'm sure you left out a fe details. maybe the word that you chose to use when you told him to lighten up. Maybe the tone that you used? But no one deserves to be treated like that. Even if you came to him the wrong way ans a black belt he should show more restrain and control. Your behavior should not dictate his response with physical confrontation.

Anyone that wants to go out blowing up prairie dogs and talking about kung fu grips and having power trips that's constantly belittling her staff..sounds like a totally insecure person that has to show her "talents in other areas" instead of her brains. There is either a way you can go above her and complain to HR/upper management or simply quite your job and get another. No one should take that kind of abuse from ANY boss no matter who the heck they are black belt or not! Get a petition signed within your office of all those she treats like that if possible... While hanging in there...maybe look at other businesses that you can do from home to start working on bringing in that significant income to replace what you're making and then some. Then you can go to your "kungfu boss" and tell her "She's fired"! Woohoo wouldn't that be a good day! I found awesome opportunity at http://www.bedavis1.mywayout.net/ and fell in love with it. You never know what you're looking for til you find it!
Good luck in the office

Firstly I'd suggest this so called black belt was way out of order,as for him demanding respect just because he is a black belt is in my mind utter nonsense, fair dues he put his time in to gain his grade, but bullying a lesser grade student and thinking that is his right is shameful especially after you have made it clear to him before he winded you with a kick. At the end of the day we are all there to learn ,not to be used as punch bags and anyone who says different ,is ether egotistical or a bully. By all means approach the main sensei ,and if he does nothing to resolve the situation so that it does'nt repeat its self ,then I'd suggest seeking out another school or style where health and safety is observed. I am totally against liberty takers. best wishes :)***

First off, don't actually fight, you will simply end up fired. Second you have someone who is one of two personality types... Either A) they are on an ego trip or B) they are a bully. It really sucks that they are your boss cause there isn't much you can do about it beyond finding a job elsewhere, or talking to her boss quietly. Beyond that I can't offer any real hope they will see the light, I've worked with people like that and the only thing that worked for me was to ignore them. Don't respond to any provocations, don't mouth off, it only encourages them. If you are not giving them anything to work with, they tend to go elswhere. Good Luck

It is good to learn kickboxing to enhance your confidance but to use it against worthless boss is not a good idea.I think you are affraid of her and she seems tobe a bully-boss.You must confront and encounter her with force and confidance.Let her remind that this is a work place where she needs to behave professionally with proper communication Tell her that abuse of words like wimp, shutup has no place there and if she keeps her mouth shut she looks more personable. Also report her to the higher authority. In general you must face her without losing your cool but show aggresiveness like it is a calm before the storm. One small exercise might help you.Whenever you have to face her take deep breaths couple of times. Goof luck.

You are in a no-win situation. Even if you challenge her, and win, you will still lose. Sounds like you boss is very aggressively destructive.
This is not a good person to work for. Does she treat everyone the same way? It might be better to seek a better boss (internally or externally).
Best Wishes!

I don't think a "double black belt in karate" exists. May be you are confusing it with a double JD Black Label?
