At collegiate level - where people play for free...

Well dan marino never won a super bowl. Joe Gibbs of the redskins won 3 superbowls with 3 different qbs. If you want to talk about a truely all around great athlete you have to go with Jim Thorpe.

Their spirit. Dan Marino did one hel of a job and you have to accept his greatness. Look at Peyton Manning though, he isn't as good in my opinion because he seems to want the Stats not the wins.
OK to this thing about Hayes being screwed out of National Titles, so was Paterno. Like the year Nixon gave it to a team that didn't even do as good as Penn State.

An athlete is measured by his performances on the field.
A coach is measured by his ability to win championships, which is why Woody Hayes was so much better than Joe Paterno. Woody won five championships in half the time it took Joe to win three.
Woody was also screwed out of two more national championships by writers at seasons-end.

their greatness is not only stats but who they are both in the locker room, and off Field too the stats just show what they have accomplished on the field but the truly great ones also are known for other accomplishments, for example... T.O. will be great because of his stats ..but his lack of team attitude and his mouth will put him down as a good player but a bad seed. it will keep him from true greatness.
