.......You can only prevent colds by not catching the germs in the first place, this would mean constantly living in isolation, ie a sterile bubble tent. There are around 400 different common colds and each time you catch one it's different to the last one. As your body builds up an immunity to your last cold, it means you never catch the same cold twice.
To make them more bearable, take paracetamol and vitamin C.

Suck on zinc lozenges 3 or 4 times a day as soon as you feel the first signs of a cold coming on. The zinc coats your throat and stops the cold virus from multiplying. Take as much rest as you can fit in and drink plenty water.
In between colds, your best prevention strategy is to wash your hands a lot.

First - and definitely foremost - is the simple task of hand washing. Washing your hands thoroughly with soap or detergent, and teaching your children to do so, can remove or decrease the level of virus on your hands and lower the chances of sharing cold viruses with others. Simple education about hand washing in daycare centers has been shown to significantly reduce transmission and the frequency of colds and respiratory infections in children. Avoid touching your fingers or hands to your eyes and nose to reduce the risk of transmitting infection. While this is often difficult for young children to learn, frequent reminders may eventually bring success.
It seems common sense that by avoiding people with infections, you reduce your risk of getting infections. And avoiding people with colds - especially during the first few days of their cold symptoms - certainly helps decrease exposure to cold viruses. But since colds are so common in the winter months, and since family members are certainly not spared, such avoidance is often undesirable and impractical.
One should not forget that nasal secretions with cold viruses will stay on utensils, toys, play equipment and most objects for some time, providing a good source for the spread of infection. Frequent cleaning and disinfecting of toys and common equipment should be performed in daycare centers to reduce transmission, and the practice may be helpful at home when infections are spreading through the family.
Luckily, all is not lost when exposure to cold viruses and other infectious agents occur. The importance of your child's immune system in fighting off infections cannot be overstated. Good nutrition is essential for good health and certainly helps maintain a healthy immune system. Eating healthy, getting plenty of rest and trying to reduce stress are all components of a plan to optimize the body's ability to fight off infection

One of the best tips I had when going through Uni was to keep healthy. And the best way to do that is to eat well and sleep well. Admittedly not that easy when you are a student!
