If a woman is afraid to be touched in her genital areas, even to the point of having a pap smear, is this a treatable condition? Is there a name for it?

There is a woman who needs to have an operation but the doctors refuse to do so until she has had a pap smear. She is not afraid of the operation but has a phobia about being touched in the genital areas.

She has chosen to forego the surgery and risk death rather than have the pap smear.

Is there a name for such phobia? What suggestion can you offer?

I don't know that there's a specific name for it, but the fact is - it can occur in some women.......I know because I'm the same. There is usually some reason underlying the fear - generally some kind of sexual abuse in childhood, although that's not always the case.

I'd advise that the woman talks to a psychiatrist about her fear, and explores with the psychiatrist the reasons underlying it. This way, hopefully the fear will be decreased and will allow the woman to have the pap smear and proceed with the operation.

a woman may have some fears and a lot of questions regarding a pap test and needs to address them with her dr but i never heard this being a phobia, women need these tests to check each year for cancer and if she refuses to have one done she is putting herself at risk for cancer along with infections and STD'S she may not be aware of

No, cherish what is sacred. No one should see our body. there is nothig wrong with being private. You really don't need a papsmear unless you are having a problem and if you are a virgin don't go at all. unless you are having a problem. These days even the doctors are saying that. women who have had unprotected sex are at risk. The main problem is for women is the hpv. wich can cause cancer in the cervix and spread. Don't worry. You will know when the time is right.
