Cotton "breathes" and allows our summer time body heat to escape. It is also absorbent, so it keeps us drier by acting as a wick for perspiration.

because cotton clothes are cheaper than other alternatives that can wick away sweat from the skin.
cheaper in $, because US growers are subsidised so depressing global price, because the impact of water use is not accounted for (look up what happened to the Aral Sea), nor is topsoil errosion (as in US dustbowl), nor huge amounts of agro-chemicals ...
basically the market has been squewed in favour of the US cotton grower at the expense of more sustainable local crops that would actually perform better, eg hemp & Linen - the first Levi jeans were made from hemp. merrino wool not only wicks away sweat but natually stops bacteria causing smells too.

Actually, cotton clothes create a wick effect. The clothes absorb perspiration and it evaporates faster from cotton making you feel cooler.

BECAUSE cotton clothes do not absorb heat thats y in summer we wear cotton clothes for cool.
