We know that the smallest complete life forms on Earth are Uni-cellular Organisms. Much prior to that Virus should have existed. But it is a semi-life form. If suspended into the air, it can live infinitely as a particle can. But, once it enters a living cell, it hijacks the cell and starts producing its own replicas. But, it can't reproduce on its own. It doesn't have DNA. It has RNA.
RNA is perceived to be the first living form as it plays a very important role in managing DNA and also manufacturing Protein.
Finally, I personally opine that it is the Organizer Molecule which is the first living entity. It controls Regulatory RNAs, which in turn control gene expression.

i'm afraid that it must not have been a living "being" on the earth.as the first living material is protoplasm.the scientist stanley miller in 1953 produced amino ,fatty acids by taking Hydrogen, methane & ammonia in flask &continuously supplied steam. To the other side he fitted glass tube connected to condensor.he passed electric current through it . thus there are still chances of producing protoplasm.may be someone does that.but the first one to be formed under water must be a protozoan.
