I wouldn't have chosen any of those you mention - phew; that's lucky. I think "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys was incredible - it took ages to get it right - but he did (Brian Wilson). The Beatles produced some fantastic songs - maybe their best ever song was "A Day in the Life" which was only ever an album track - if you are looking for singles then maybe "Strawberry Fields". The Rolling Stones peaked musically in the late 60s with songs like "Gimme Shelter"

For a pop song, Annie Lennox' Love song for a vampire, from the OST of Bram's Stokers Dracula. The title is creepy, the song is even more. Musically, I like Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. My brother amazes me everytime he performs with that song. Dream Theater's Surrounded, musically superior. Well any from DT are, but this is the best of the popular ones.

For me personally 'Love will tear us apart' by Joy Division.
My inner critic defaults to 'Imagine' by John Lennon or 'Blowing in the Wind' by Bob Dylan, just for the stark simplicity of the messages.
