It depends on what you are classifying as safe, water that is safe to swim in may not be safe to drink. Water that you wash clothes in may be harmful to your skin due to too high of chlorine. If you are looking to make water safe to drink several ways to accomplish this, iodine drinking tabs, purifying filters (backpacking store) or boiling the water and collecting the steam. If you are looking for how safe is your water call the local water district and they can provide a report for the contaminants in the water. If you want to test your own water I would suggest a water test kit and I know Hach (www.hach.com) sells a wide range of easy to use test equipment from simple chlorine to state of the art complete water analysis systems.

If you are camping your two choices (other than bottled water) are to use a water purification filter bottle or to drop chloride tablets into your water before drinking. If you are worried about cysts in the running water you want to drink then boil it to be sure.
If you have water from a private well at home bring it to a lab for testng periodically, If you are worried about municipal water, check with town or water authority. They are required to test for a lot of things and to report the results to users.

If it looks or smells funny, don't drink it, or dive in.
