Has any1 learnt to speak french? without having any previous knowledge of the language?

without having any previous knowledge of the language- if so how long did it take? and how did you learn e.g. tapes, online, courses?

can be easy if you like latin languages. don't go online. start with tapes, take courses (check out the Alliance Francaise near you)

a course is ur best bet because a teacher can hear where ur going wrong when u can't sometimes. There is no point pronouncing something incorrectly over n over. I began to learn in year 9 when i was 15, by half way thru year 10 i was becoming fluent in simple french. I could hold a polite, if not too in depth, conversation and understood enough to keep myself out of trouble (fingers crossed- i still hope to travel to france, eventually). It was invaluable having a fun, skilled teacher who had actually lived in Paris for 3 years. She knew the slang, curse words, n uniquely 'french' phrases.There are some good online courses which may include a lil mic time with ur tutor but i found face to face was best. It's ten years later n yes i'm rusty but i can still speak french with proper accent, read n write a lil. I figure with a concentrated brush up it'll all come back with more, hopefully. Good luck

Yes i did, 2 years of school courses and home learning about 10 mins a week. I used lots of different books picture books were the best for beggining but i used heaps of different brands. I even had a French savings mini acount. I stored all my french money in my piggybank. I put away like $2 every $10. So then i could buy books and i joined afew libraries. So now i can speak french and you have to keep practicing. So after you learnt it fully then just keep on going and you'll learn to think in french instead of having to go when some one says' Bonjour je m'appelle.....' oh aa bonjour means hello, je mappelle means, oh no i forgot! So to think in french took me about 1/2 a yeart even less!

your best bet is what teachers call ' a bain linguistique' literally it means that u take a bath or a plunge in the language. a tape or online courses or even a classroom will not teach you how to speak a language. the spoken word with all its twist and turns is best learnt from the natives who speak it so your best bet is is find a french friend from canada or france and have that person communicate with u.

i took 3 years of it in high school. After that I stopped. I still remember a lot but it is quite different from english. I find that french and similar languages are annoying because they have gender conjugations and rules that english doesnt have. But learning a new language is rewarding in its own way.

At school.Not fluent,but I get by.We had a 1 hour lesson each week for a year.No tapes,just the teacher and a book to follow.There's some good basic sites on the net,free

I moved to Paris and learned in one year. Watched tv, interacting with children helped a lot, read books. Then I borrowed school books from relatives and studied those.
Books and tv helped a lot.
