Thats why I do not own a television I refuse to pay for all the rubbish thats on it.
The BBC do not have adverts and thats the main reason we pay for the license.
I can fill my head with whatever I want and do not need to sit in front of a tv set filling it with crap.
At least on the Internet you choose what to look at.

We pay TV licence to pay for the BBC as it is a public service broadcaster. It is publicly funded which means it does not need to show adverts to raise revenue and also is not a profit making business.

This does mean that the BBC has to remain impartial and show a certain percentage of programmes which are seen to be for the public good. Eg history, religion etc and they cannot show too many pure entertainment shows eg x factor & celebritly love island.

To pay for the BBC, which has long been a public service. If we didn't then it would probably become like Channel 4 which is a public service but has to fund itself through advertising and putting on big spectacles such as Big Brother in order to do things like Channel 4 News and Dispatches.

I still like the BBC as it is, but it can get a bit hit-and-miss with some of it's programmes, yes.

Isn't it ridiculous??! You even need to get a licence for a dog here (in Ireland anyway) but as they say, any old fool can have a child. We pay enough out of our wages as it is to the bastards without having to pay to look at TV!

Because of the wonderful BBC.

They refuse to show advertisements thus forcing us to buy a licence.

I remember reading a court case a few years ago where someone was taken to court for not having a TV licence.

They lost due to the person claimed and proved that the TV that he had was unable to receive BBC1 & BBC2 on the TV.

This rule was quickly changed due to a number of people doing this same thing.

Because the BBC refuse to have advertising, we have to pay the licence fee to raise revenue for them. It does seem unfair if we have to pay for satellite or cable though. The BBC also waste loads of money by having hundreds of radio stations, each local area has its own. Also just accounting for radio one, they fly out to major sporting activities and every year we pay for them to go to Ibiza. That's why the licence fee is so steep. Sorry I'll get off my soap box now!

To pay for the BBC so they can produce rubbish programs..

Personally I think the TV licence should be scrapped!

also to add to why do we pay for a tv licence the goverment are absolute sxxxs. to give a 75 year old a free tv licence. that age is ridiculous. the law should change it to 65.

to help fund the bbc. advertising would usually fund the licence fee courtesy of ITV, channel 4 and channel 5, but because the bbc channels don't have adverts they come up with another way of getting the money- and that's by making people watch their crappy programmes, well most of them are crap that is

It's just a convenient tax, called a licence.
It is purely to raise money.
Nothing to do with actually needing a licence.
