Fine question... Dave Gilmour is god indeed. His toneful, beautifully touched playing is some of the most emotional rock playing ever.
Hendrix sowed the overdriven rock seeds and should be mentioned. Although not the "best" guitar player ever, he was definately a MASSIVE influence on anybody that has just cranked it up to 10 and let rip a bit.
Joe Satriani is , I would say, probably the most acomplished modern virtuoso. His seminal album, "Surfing with the alien" is still one of the finest examples of rock composure.
The problem with picking just one is that you'de have to leave the rest out..... Via, May, Moore, Knopfler and on...
Still...... second solo on Comfortably Numb eh?.... awsome...

Let's talk, taking it to the next level......4 guy's in this century have taken the guitar to the next level....number one was a guy named Charlie Christian in the 1930's innovator of the art of improvisation, nobody had seen anybody like him before....
Next was Chuck Berry 1950's, his original sound was the mold for the Rock n' Roll we listen to today......
Then came Jimi Hendrix 1960's expanding the musical journey of an electric guitar and the ride it could take you on, it's sort of like sitting around a campfire and every bodies talking but eventually the talking dies down and everyone becomes mesmerized by the fire, lost in thought, gone on a primal journey in your mind, that's what his music did to you....Jimi also worked alone allot in his studio and laid down some sound scape's that today, they don't even know how he did them.....
Then came Eddie Van Halen, who basically saved Rock n' Roll from the Walmart bargain bin with his two handed tapping and improvising which was unseen before, he had a guitar tone on his earlier albums that I don't think anybody has matched to this date, and his chord progressions are also unmatched to this date.....there are smatterings of good guitarist here and there these days but I haven't seen anybody take it to the next level....some will say what about Steve Vai and Joe Satriani...no not even them....
Hey Hillbilly.....if you wanna talk classical and jazz....let's talk about Lenny Breau......He was about 10 or so (not sure) years younger than Chet......He had Chets jaw on the ground....says who, says Chet....go find something online about Chet's opinion of this guy.....When Lenny played it almost sounded like three guitars......
Here's a link for you HILLBILLY.....http://www.lennybreau.com/lbart2.html

There are so many great guitarist, without a question in my mind, i would have to say Stevie Ray Vaughn because of his diversity and stamina. As for those still living, I would have to say Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame, of course Eric Clapton as well. Tough Question!

maximum acceptable? Or conventional? Satriani is, actually, in a classification of his own. yet, then again, so is David Gilmour. The "maximum acceptable" i have ever considered,or heard, up close, & own, is a guy named Joe Carter, from large apple. From what I comprehend, he's,(or became) a pupil of Satriani. His emphasis is on acoustic Jazz guitar, yet he performs each and every thing from classical, to the most cruel heavy metallic. From a in elementary words technical standpoint, Carter, like Satriani and Gilmour, is truly proper. he's no longer too nicely established in this usa, yet is, curiously, in Europe, the position Jazz guitar is a lot extra universal. in case you ever get the prospect, see Joe Carter stay. you gained't believe your eyes, or ears.
