If we have a registered domain name then how can we host our content on that site. I mean where will the data be and what will be the IP adress assigned to that domain in the DNS. Can we a host site on our own computer, just by specifing our own IP address somewhere.

You can use a virtual domain. Check out http://www.no-ip.com/

very simple.
let me explain you how it works...
U register a new domain name e.g. network solutions. They will hold your Name Server. Name Server is the server runing DNS + Webserver and other services.
For you to host website on your computer u can simply go to the DNS tools on the website where you registered your domain name. Put the IP address of your computer (note: you need to have at least one public IP address on the computer Connected to the internet). Onceyou have done that go to dnsstuff.com and write your domain name and do a lookup for NS (Name Server). results should show ur computer IP address. If you see that result that means you ready to host the website on ur computer. Now u need to have a dns running on ur computer and a webserver. if you are using Windows u can use IIS or u can download APACHE for windows. If you have linux u can install apache. now u asked where to drop your web files. it can be any folder on your computer but u need to tell apache or iis to look in that folder (ASSIGN ROOT FOLDER FOR THAT WEBSITE). if you understand DNS and webserver it will be a very easy job for you to do all this. But if you dont then also i would say do it :) you will learn things.... if u want to save your time from all these hassels simple go to networksolutions.com and register for a domain and space with a very basic plan .. it will not cost u more than 50$ year.

You need to purchase hosting. point the domain to the hosting(your property on the WWW just cuz u gave it a name, it still needs land to build on), the upload the site to the hosting. I used 'hosting dude dot com', they were really tech support helpful, Im sure that will help you with everything, and non expensive.
