Sociology observes the reality; economics tries to explain why the reality is what it is and sometimes succeeds. For example, social stratification, a subdiscipline of sociology, studies inequality and class structure in the society. Economics tries to explain why inequality changes over time; in the U.S., for example, inequality is inversely related to inflation and the strength of unions and directly related to immigration.

Economics can be simplified into acquiring goods and services. Sociology in the same way can be narrowed down to a group of individuals with a common bond and common interest. Now, if the group’s most basic economic needs, namely food, clothing and shelter, are going to be met, supplying those needs are the strata of that society. Meaning the society would be broken down into areas of specialized occupations. The carpenters and builders would provide the shelter, Hunter/gathers would provide the food and the Weavers/Spinners would provide the clothing. Economics come into play when the Hunter trades a deer to the Weaver for enough clothing for his family. Since the Weaver couldn’t use all the meat at one time, he bartered with the Carpenter for a table and chairs. As time progressed, we find our next group in the relationship, the Merchants. This group had none of the skills required for the basics, so the Merchants participates in the Economics of this Sociological group by collecting some items from each group, and providing a place where all can come and trade. Once coins and paper money were introduced as an exchange for goods and services, the Bankers/Moneylenders moved up the socioeconomic ladder of this group. The different providers that go to make up a group are interrelated and bound by what he provides to the group, a relationship of dependency on, citizens, the public, the culture and finally, the civilization.
