The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is the name of the song (or Mbube in Zulu), originally done The Evening birds in 1939. The song we know today is a lot different than the original, music is the same. New lyrics were written by George Weiss, Luigi Creatore, and Hugo Peretti based loosely on the original text. This 'new' version was released by the Tokens in 1961 as 'Wimoweh'/'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'. Still a very popular song and covered often.

The song was a huge hit in 1961 (I think that's the year) and was sung by the Tokens. The title of their version is "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." The Weavers did do the song as well, under the title of "Wimomeh"

In addition to the two groups mentioned above the Kingston Trio recorded it also. I think it was on an album called "Live From the Hungry I", sometime in the late 50's or early 60's . Wow that makes me feel old !

I know Bobby Darin did a version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", but I'm not sure if it is the original!

In the 60's a group called the Tokens made it a giant hit. It is their signature song and I do believe they are the original ones to do it.
