There is some validity to the old trick of drinking a warm glass of milk before you go to bed to help facilitate sleep. This is due mostly to milk's plentiful store of the amino acid tryptophan. Once tryptophan reaches your brain, it boosts production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps you sleep. Milk contains about 112 milligrams of tryptophan per eight-ounce glass.
Because carbohydrates also increase serotonin production - which is why you may feel sleepy after a big plate of pasta - the carbs in milk also help you to drift off.
Finally, the warmth of the milk can provide a feeling of comfort, whereas cold fluids often deliver a jolt to your system.
Tryptophan can't be bought in supplement form and there's no difference in levels in skimmed milk and whole fat milk so always choose the pint of skimmed milk.

A cup of warm milk is no magic sleep potion, yet it is probably the most common food associated with bedtime. Milk contains two substances that are known to be related to sleep and relaxation, the hormone melatonin and the amino acid tryptophan. The amount of melatonin in a glass of milk is minute, much less than what would be taken in a supplement. The amount of tryptophan in milk is also small. In addition, our digestive process is complex. Considering these factors, it is unlikely that a glass of warm — or cold — milk would shorten the length of time that it takes to fall asleep.

I have heard, that warm milk is a natural sedative. Personally, the only way I like milk warm, is in hot chocolate.

I think it comes from the fact that when we are babies and after we have drunken warm milk we go to sleep. It actually works with me, it's weird, but try this: warm the milk, add two spoons or sugar and dissolve and add one teaspoon of vanilla essence. Drink that and see if it doesn't help you sleep.

A warm milky drink is supposed to help you sleep. Personally i'm allergic to milk so can't take any and i find herbal tea (Camomille, honey and vanilla) Works a treat. My partner always has a milky drink, seems to work for him if it never worked for my children so maybe try herbal tea?

It usually works for me, and I think it's because of what Alan C above said.
