Being in A coma and being a vegetable are 2 very different things, Nobody wakes up from being a vegetable, That means there is way too much brain damage and the person will never fully function again. A coma is like being knocked out for a long period of time. People can wake up from that.

It depends on how long they have been a "vegetable" or in a coma. Most people have so much rehabilitation to do. That they are not mad at their family. Now they may be mad if they are retarded or deformed. But they ususally work through those feelings with time. I have a friend that was in a coma for almost a year. When he woke up, he had to learn everything again. He had the mental capacity of a two year old. It took about three to four years just to get him to preteen mentality. He was angry at first, not with his family so much. But more with why that had to happen to him. And his two year girlfriend who hit the door before they even had the first iv in his arm after the accident. He has some mild brain damage that will never be fixed or heal. But I know he is greatful that his family held on and gave him a second chance at life. He was messing up pretty bad, drugs, breaking the law and stuff like that. To go from an honor student to a drug addict is hard to deal with for some. But to have a second lease on life is all some people need. To actually change the bad habits and bad things that they have done. Now as for the ones that are going to be bed ridden for the rest of their lives. On breathing machines and all that crap. I am not sure that their families should keep them alive. I know personally myself. I would not want to live in a bed staring at the ceiling for the rest of my life. And I would hate my husband if he did that to me. We have an agreement that if there is a chance that we will be normal when it is all over. Than we can keep the other alive or trying to as long as there is a chance. But if there is no chance of living a normal life, pull the plug. Now as for what they think about, I'm not sure. My friend woke up like he was only sleeping through the night. He no awarness of him being asleep for almost a year. He said it was like a dream, you would dream on a regular night. He had no idea what had happened, he didn't even know why he was in the hospital. He had no memory of the accident or anything. All he could remember was his girlfiends name - Julie. But he didn't know who she was or what she looked like he didn't even know his parents. I hope this helps you some.

They are not really the same person anymore. Often such persons have become more like a child again and grow from there. Like most children they have a great capacity for joy. Sometimes the smallest things can make them very happy.

EDIT: I agree with Derek J people are not suppose to wake up after being classified in medical terms what you classify as being a vegetable. However there have been several documented cases of just that happening.

You ask a general question like this and you will get rhetorical answers. People who have been in comas who wake up report that they could hear everything said, but could not respond. Their thought processes were alive. They were living but in a body that did not respond. They couldn't talk or move one part of their bodies but they were fully aware. Meanwhile the doctors were ready to pull the plug. And when they woke up, they were happy to be free of the coma. The husband, wife, mom or friend that read to these or talked to them and got no feedback, not even a toe wiggle, ultimately found out that they had done a world of good to the person in the coma. Those visits game them hope. People in comas report upon waking up that those who talked to them as if they were normal people, gave them hope and determination to be normal again.

There are too many variables to answer. Was the 'vegetable' a child or an adult? Was the 'vegetable' a nice person that the family liked or loved? How long was the 'vegetable' in that condition? Was the 'vegetable' suffering terrible pain when they woke up? Did the 'vegetable' get in that condition as a result of a suicide attempt?

Its too bad if they are mad. They should of had something in writing stating that they wanted someone to pull the plug should something like this ever happen.
My husband knows the conditions, we already discussed it. Thats something that everyone should talk about. As sick as it sounds.
