That was not the way it was put out by the researchers, they were more interested in the results it produced and what this could leaad onto in future diagnosis or treatment.
Ethics is a different issue, personaly i think people who are in a vegative state should be allowed to die. If we lived natural exsistances they would die naturaly if they were in such a state, now people our being kept artificialy alive when there bodies are ready to die. Are we playing god by keeping vegative people alive? I know i would want to be alowed to die rather than in a bed with no speach and no activity if i was in such a state.

Well I don't know about all that. But if that is true then their must be a way to find out what she wants. If I were in a vegetative state and their was a slight possibilty that I would come out of it then I would want to be given six months. After that then I would want to be let go. Put me down like a dog. Don't starve me to death.
Being aware that I am in a vegetative state seems like it would be extremely depressing. I wouldn't want to live that way for to long.

I once saw a programme about this sort of thing. There was a boy who had been found unconcious for no known reason and was in a vegetitive state in a home for years. He was transfered to another place and a new worker decided to reassess him. He was told to squeeze a buzzer and he did. They called his mum to come in and with the aid of the buzzer he was able to tell her he loved her. All these years he has been locked in a world where he was totally aware but totally ignored.
same with a woman who lay in a vegetative state and had to listen to her husband and sister argue over whether or not to let her die.
If there is brain activitity then it is murder to kill these people.

If that is true then it is absolutely a proof of life. However it raises the other question of how could they possibly monitor that?
But....If someone can be proven to be aware even if thought to be in a vegetative state, then they definitely should be kept alive.

doesn't this raise another question ....they say you are in a vegetative state and that your life support should be switched off but yet your brain will react to things asked off you does this then mean that they are murdering you as you can no longer be classed as brain dead.....i think more needs to be done to find out if this is just a deep level reaction or if there is still life there and how we can tap into it to see if the person comes round ...but if you were to have no life isn't it better to just ignore these reactions maybe we will all have to have a living will

If the person is aware and responds to any stimuli that means the person's brain is still alive, thus the person should also be kept alive. As long as the brain is alive and reacting there is always hope, only in cases of certain brain death should life support be pulled.

I think that the next of kin should be allowed to make the decision.
Surely it would be better to be unaware? It must be so frustrating being in a vegetaive state and being aware of that.

I DISAGREE.
As she is aware but just not conscious. meaning in a long dream state, she is clinically alive. it would be murder.
In any case , when do we know we are actually dead or have died. There are some vague guidelines dating back to the middle ages. as far we are concerned many assumed dead ppl may actually have been buried or cremated alive.

I can't think of anything worse than being compus mentus in my mind but unable to communicate or influence the outside world in any way. I would rather die than be kept alive like that -it would be worse than being in a prison. Listen to Metallica's "One" to see what it would be like.....
