It seems today that many people sue and get away with things so easily. Two stories which come to mind are a guy who hired a camper van in the uk, whilst driving along the highway, decided to put it on cruise control, and go and make himself a cup of tea. Of course the van crashed, he survived and sued the hire company for not explaining that cruise control did not mean the vehical would drive by itself.... he won the case!!! Another...a guy insured his expensive box of cigars for theft and fire damage. He smoked the lot of them and claimed insurance from from the broker, but in this case they got their own back by charging him with arson....what is the world coming to?

I often wonder about the same thing. We have become such a litigious society, where so many people seem to have their eye on the prize - ready to blame others for their own stupidity and poor judgement, and at the same time, make a quick buck for themselves. But take heart! There are just as many people who, like you and me, take responsibility for their own actions and believe the best way to get that dollar is to earn it. I'm raising my son with the same ethics. Hopefully one day the pendulum will swing back the other way and people won't be entitled to tie up our legal systems with such foolishness!!

I think rental car company has to appeal at higher level and fight the case with the great defense. Whether the company explain or not it is drivers' responsibilities to read the manual of the car and that's where defense can get strong hold. Whoever gave the judgement was partially right. Both the cases were conceived by the asker or author of this question. Because only in your dream you can have an insurance of the Cigar Packet against fire damage. One more thing Broker charge brokerage for their service and Insurance agents gets commission for their Service rendered to the party. The world is what you think as it is.

It's too easy to blame someone else. We live in a society with "$hit Happens" bumper stickers, but ALWAYS assign blame when it does. People are so afraid of being wrong anymore (because wrongdoers are sued), even if it's not possible to always be right!
If I make a mistake, I'll fess up to it every time. I'm just a normal person, and I'm as susceptible to mistakes as the next person. Besides, it gives me an opportunity to learn how to not make the same mistake. If I blame someone or something else, then I don't learn anything.
It's really simple: if you mess up, say you're sorry and do your best to remedy the situation. Most people I know appreciate honesty and learning from mistakes FAR more than being an arrogant prick.

It was a hard thing to realize that my life is what it is because of the choices I've made. But once I realized that, it's become easier to take responsibility for myself because I've learned to make better choices, and live with the past ones that weren't so good.

Do you take responsibility for yourself?
I mean, it's really hard to do that, because we tend to run away from what the world deems wrong. Right and wrong is determined by the culture, moral and society. It changes by time when human's thinking begins to change.
It is said that we have to be responsible for our own actions. Yes, but are we supposed to take responsibility for the unforeseen consequences?
I try my best to be responsible for what I do, but it's really difficult.

Everyone has to take responsibility to protect oneself. In this case, these guys protect themselves by suing the respective company to make sure they get what they felt they deserve. This is responsiblity they take to put themselves at the advantage.

Yes I do. That was one of the underlying things that my parents made me learn. It is a blessing and a curse because it really gives me the red azz when I see people who don't.
