So you can see in advance whats coming up like films, dvd's books, information games, events, shopping, fashions, trends for the coming seasons, ad's for new products coming soon, articles promoting things, articles about things like 9/11 before it's passed by. To allow you good time to get things you migt want.

Mags are produced at least two months in advance. And then the post office gives them a date on which they can bring bundles of these magazines to be posted at a concessional rate. More difficult getting a date from them than from a girl! This, I think, varies from country to country, so I'm not sure how it is in yours.
So, if I am a magazine head, I would rather send advance issues than late issues. If I'm given Sept 20th as a date, then isn't it better that I send my readers October issues on Sept 20th instead of isues marked September?
The irritation of readers who think they have got their issue late is worse than yours!
Hope that helped.

It drives me nuts too. Some are even further ahead than that. It is about sales from the stuff they have in it. Retailers want us to go out and buy stuff early, so getting the Autumn fashions in an essentially Summer magazine makes us go out and buy the stuff. That's why shops start stocking swimsuits when there is still snow on the ground.

Actually, it's for marketing reasons (why else!). By releasing magazines a month ahead, the shelf-life is extended.
A casual purchaser might pick up the current month's issue thinking it was the latest one, whereas in reality it is a month old. This allows the newsagent to maximise his opportunity to sell his stock.

cos magazines work three to four months ahead of schedule.
and their main stream of income is from advertisements.
imagine they only release the dec issue in dec itself - people would have done their xmas shopping!
very soon your favourite magazine would have to fold up.
