Both of these come from the middle ages, and were ways of asking for God's protection. Touching wood came from the fact that there were so many bits of 'the one true cross' being sold, that people claimed that that is what was being touched; and crossing fingers is simply making a sign of the cross.
Incidentally, I believe walking under a ladder is regarded as unlucky simply because something may fall on you.
Black cats crossing your path comes from the idea that such an animal was a witch's familiar, and thus you had drawn the witch's attention to you.

Yes, I have often touched wood, but only after I or someone else has tempted fat by saying "well, at least it's not ....".
Sometimes I will touch something blue, when I see a magpie. This or saying "Hello Mr Magpie, how is your wife". Comes from the belief that magpies mate for life, so seeing a male magpie on his own means that his wife is dead and he is lonely or she is sitting on eggs back at the nest.
But I walk under ladders, if there is no-one up it carrying something heavy and especially if going round one involves walking in the middle of a busy road. This superstition was made popular by Christians centuries ago, who believed that by doing so you break the holy trinity triangle created by a ladder leaning on the wall.
Other superstitions that I have heard, but don't do:
- Hold breathe when passing a cemetry.
- Burying a mirror in the garden after breking on to prevent 7 years bad luck (propbably comes from the Victorian era, where if a servant broke an ornate mirror, it took 7 years to pay for it by having there wages cut.
- bad luck if a black cat crosses your path (or is it good luck), something to do with witches traditionally having a black cat.
- can't remember the one that involves having to spin around 3x!!!

OK ..here is it in black and white ... superstitions are BS.
If you want something to happen, you need to write it down and read it twice a day and eventualy, in some form or another, it will happen. We've only begun to tap into our human psychic which is phenomenal. Our brains can deliver information at 100 to the 1000 power (or googleplex). This is all known as Quantum physics/mechanics. Our government is already working on this as we speak. It involves multi-dimensions. They are trying to create a quantum computer. What is a quantum computer you ask? It's a computer that runs in different dimensions(in this case, they are working on a 6 dimension computer). This computer will be able to calculate answers instantly. This is NOT the same as having a compter running 6 processors mind you..no no.. MUCH more powerful when you apply quantum mechanics.
Back to superstitions. If you beleive strongly that a bad thing is going to happen to you. Then it may because you control your dimensional quantum reality. So my advice to you ..think positive ! IT REALLY WORKS ...
P.S. Don't put dates on goals and dont write down a goal starting with the letter I ... write down as you have already obtained it...Like... My Mercedes is parked out in the driveway. It it silver with tan interior leather, a v12 S class and its sitting in my driveway right now. Don't write down ... I wish that I will win the lottery tonight. That will not work.
If you really dont know what in the world I am talking about, then you need to read this. See link below ..IT REALLY WORKS, I ALREADY TRIED IT. Good luck and may that ultimate dream of yours be a reality soon.

I touch wood to stop something bad from happening. Never put shoes on a table. Don't open an umbrella in the house. I believe black cats crossing my paths are lucky. If my palm itches I'm getting money. If I shiver for no reason it means someone is walking on my grave (phrase meaning talking about you etc). Plant lavender for luck. Throw salt over my left shoulder. When I see a magpie I always look for another one to get rid of the bad luck. Never disturb a fairy ring and if I do I always do something to right it. And I never walk under ladders but thats for obvious reasons!

Superstition is comfortable way to escape learning and persistence needed for acquiring knowledge of the natural laws which you can find even in such small book as The Art of Living (Epictetus) by Sharon Lebel is. You can, so to say, keep it on your palm, and get a help day and night wherever you are.Maybe it is not for you. You will immediately know when reading this. If your feelings tells you NO! obey and forget.

Yeah, I've heard of this. My friend always taps the roof of his car three times if he's about the cross a red light on a junction. What superstitious connotations it has I don't know but apparently its worked for him. (I personally think he's nuts ignoring signals!)
Another is the magpie theory as in the nursery rhyme which goes "one" for sorrow "two" for Joy "three" for a girl "four" for a boy "five" for gold and "six" for a secret never to be told. Again I'm miffed by this one but if anyone knows about it that would be nice to know!
Thanks great question!

Yes - all the time. Apparently it's bad luck if a Robin flies inside your house or if a picture falls off a wall for no reason - both are a sign of death. A bit like a banshee wailing !
If I have an ichy nose I'll shake hands with someone that I dont want to fight with.

If I see a magpie I am compelled to search another because I (irrationally!) believe 1 alone is bad luck. Like the old saying "1 for sorrow 2 for joy 3 for a girl & 4 for a boy 5 for silver 6 for gold seven for a secret never to be told!" My friend believes if you see a lone magpie you must salute it to ward off bad luck!

Future is unknown, yet people cross their fingers or are wishful at times in many other ways. Truth is that things may happen as wished or other wise without there being any connection with expected results.

Lift up your feet and hold your breath when you're passing graveyards in a car. Say 'pididdle' when you see a car with one headlight and hit the roof, the dash, and then the roof again with your open hand(more of a game in which you compete with the other people in your car). After navy sailors toast to something, they hit their cups on the table before they drink for universal good luck to sailors...
