I'm not sure how many but the first most high profile South Americans had to be the Argentinians Ricardo Villa and Oswaldo Ardiles for Spurs during the eighties.
The kind of hype surrounding the signing of the two Argentinians for the Hammers now is nothing compared to that of Villa and Ardiles back in the eighties where foreign footballers were a novelty to the English game.

I think it started 28 years ago with Ossie Ardiles and Ricardo Villa but just how many are here at the present I am not sure but I have found these Hernan Crespo on loan from chelsea to Internazionale, Juan Pablo Angel Arango at Aston Villa, Gilberto Silva at Arsenal, Pedro Mendes at Portsmouth.

I don't know the answer but noticed that no one listed George Robledo who played for Newcastle in the 50s played in two cup finals and scored the winning goal against Arsenal in1952 He was Chilean as was his brother Ted who also played in that game.

Even before Tarantino went to Birmingham, there were two brothers at the Villa called Arce! ( seriously... Oscar Arce and Hector Arce ) but they pronounced it 'ar-chay'.
