Personally, I have best experience with IBM. I have used Acer, IBM, Compaq, Dell before, but I would put my money on IBM. Go for the T60 series.

I suggest an HP dv2000, everything you want, and you can customize it to fit your pocket, card reader, light scribe, webcam, extra long life batreri.... and so on... I compared a lot of laptops this month, and the most features are in this laptop and if you fully loaded... will be 1900 and you will get some rebates back.... but you can make a nice one in a 1000$, same laptop I got if I was going to get a Mac was 1100 more expensive, and a toshiba 500$...

You want something with a fast CPU processing speed (this is calculater is Hertz or GigaHertz )
and also lotsa and lots of RAM ...the more RAM the better
Hard drive space is not all that important (epending on the purpose of your notebook)
Something around the 20Gig mark will suffice

Acer, Systemax(Tiger Direct), HP
I'd get a 1.8-2.4 P4(Forget Celeron or Duo-core)
Get at least 512MB ram ,1G is best
128MB or better video card----try to stay away from onboard video
80GB or better 5400rpm or 7200rpm hard drive
Wireless is up to you.
15" screen or better is a must. Those 12" Sony screens kill your eyes.

Depends what you want to do with it?
There are plenty of web sites where you can compare different brands and prices.
