If you saw a homeless person eating from a rubbish bin, would you stop and offer money or to buy him or her lunch? Or would you turn away and try to forget what you had just witnessed?

While I'm sure it happens, I've never actually seen a homeless person eating from the rubbish bin. The cans and bottles in the rubbish bin are usually sufficient to allow them to go buy a hamburger or something.

If I saw an homeless person eating from a rubbish bin, i'd ask them to come home and help me clear some brush in exchange for some cash, a meal, and a place to crash for the night until the job was done. I still have a ton of brush to clear, so this is a good-deal for me, and some guy that likes mac and cheese.

A few weeks ago, I drove past a man with a sign that described his dire situation. He needed money for living.

Nearby was a man that was paid to dance and hold a sign advertising some houses for sale. It ocurred to me that the begging-man could become a wage-earning man by holding a different sign, but he'd have to dance around with it to attract attention. That was probably too much work, though I'm sure he was qualified. He held his sign real well, but he didn't dance at all.

Directly across from the begging man with his sign was a group of kids with a sign. They were in a dire situation, too. They needed money for their school club, and were offering to wash cars in exchange for it. There were a lot of people that were happy to pay $5 for a clean car. Maybe all the guys with signs could organize a car wash.

I'm really tired of able-bodied beggars.

As a homeless person I have read these answers & feel sad because these people don't see beyond whats in it for them.
I have been homeless for 14 years,I live in a cardboard box & only have this computer for company & a source to speak to people about my plight.
If I wasn't homeless & I saw a homeless person eating out of a rubbish bin, I would take them home to cleanup, to a shop to get them some new clothes then to a nice restaurant for a good meal.
I would be sure to keep all the receipts so I could "write it off on tax" like it is expected of me by the government.

We live in an area where there are many homeless. Most of them take the cash you give them and buy beer. I prefer to buy them lunch. I sometimes keep extra crackers in my car or snacks to give them.
A good number of them in this area are able to work but choose not to. We have so many day labor places so it is not a lack of jobs. I
I recently read about a guy who made himself homeless for a few months to see what it was like. He described how poorly people treated him and it was pretty sad. He also stated that the best thing you could do for a homeless person was offer him a smile, some food, and beverage.

I would more than likely offer them the lunch I had in my hand as offering money is often not the answer as most of them will just spend it on the wrong thing like booze. This is the reason a lot of homeless people are just that as they have somewhere along the way made the wrong choices.

It would depend where i was or if I had money on me.
If I saw this homeless person in an alley and no one else were around I'd keep on walking, but if others were around (for my protection) then I would definately but some groceries for them to keep with them or any other items that might help them. Perhaps at WalMart or somewhere . I don't like givng money because often it will be spent on booz.

I would get them something to eat. Not all homeless people want to be there, not all of them are drunks or druggies. Some of them are good honest people just sometimes we can not for see happens and that's where they end up is on the streets homeless.

I have always given the shirt per say off my back for someone in need , whether they are homeless or not. I think more people should be like that and the world would be a better place.

I would offer to buy him/her lunch. I would like to understand how they got in that position. I feel walking away is insensitive and hey, we have been doing that for years...to self involved to take time and help our fellow man. Just giving money is a way to feel good, but really doesn't mean you truely care...you just want to feel better. Just a quick answer for you - could go into more detail for my answer if needed.

I wouldn't offer money but I have gone and bought lunch for a few that I've seen. I feel more comfortable knowing that they'll have a belly full of food rather than booze or drugs.
