The periodic Table is a list of all natural and man made elements - most are gas or solid ore. The atomic number is the abount of free electrons in it's (the element's) outter ring. For instance, H (for Hydrogen) has 2 electrons in it's outter orbit. It can share those electrons with other elements that are positively charged.

It is a list of the elements organized first by increasing atomic number (number of protons) and second (columns) by the number of electrons in the outer shell. Elements in the same column have similar chemical properties because chemical interactions between atoms is determined primarily by that outer electron shell.

Sorry Strobel, you got it wrong...
The ATOMIC NUMBER (Z) is the number of Protons, and for H, Z=1, since it has only 1 Proton. (Helium is 2, with 2 protons...)
The number of electrons is equal to the number of Protons for a neutral atom (non-ion).
Check "Periodic table Mendeleev" on any search engine.
