I have a Lippincot textbook for high schoolers published back in the 1950's and the exercises in the book are much more strenuous than anything I ever had to do in school. I can't imagine many people on Yahoo Answers ever being able to perform them.

Oh yes they have been on the decline. I think that part of it is because of the "kinder, gentler" school system that seems to have been adopted in North America. Some of the grade nine students that I have taught can read well enough, but their writing and spelling skills are horrible! Don't even get me started on their math skills!!

Randomly peruse the questions on Yahoo answers. Can there be any doubt that modern writing skills are in the toilet?

It's actually a disadvantage to have good grammar skills because you wind up gritting your teeth every time you have to read one of your boss' e-mails.

I will say the level of writing skill is lower than previous generations.
However, you must also consider many people here are from foreign countries and kids in school.

I blame text messaging, as well as declining standards in education. Now just wait for the replies like "U R being elitst i kno i cann knot spel but whut givs u hte write to juj me?"

I agree,look at some of the examples on here.Some of the questions are impossble to decypher.
