I can't afford a hybrid because they are overpriced.

Advice?

Sure, pick one that's small. Something like a Honda Fit or Toyota Yarris if you're buying new, or a Geo Metro or Ford Escort or Focus if you're buying used.

and lookup the model year and model/trim line that you are interested in.

Have you tried looking at a nice used hybrid? Price may still be too high for you (I don't know your price range), because they hold their value rather well (little depreciation). Even using flawed depreciation data, most new hybrids are cheaper than a gas-only counterpart. Just have to remember to use the US Federal income tax credit info, and it's even better if your state offers a credit as well. http://www.cnn.com/2006/AUTOS/08/22/bc.autos.hybrids.reut/index.html

In general, a used car will be less expensive. For fuel costs only, look into finding a diesel and running it on biodiesel or as a greasecar. Even better for fuel prices would be to find a used EV...

For just a price point, a new small car or subcompact with little amenities would probably fit the bill. Less weight in a small car and from the lack of amenities would usually mean better fuel economy. (The hybrids are a compact size or larger, and typically have amenities only found on the higher-end of the model lines.)
