I would say the few basics are pretty simple, and cost effective. If you have a pentium 4, that's not too bad. You may think about upgrading that, perhaps to a duo-core processor if you want to run lots of applications at the same time, but that's expensive. Your RAM however, if you only have 128MB, then you can easily upgrade to 512MB or 1GB pretty cheap. Hard drive? Most computers nowadays have at least a 60 GB drive, so think about that. If you are gonna upgrade your hard drive(kind of pricey, but not too bad) spend the extra penny and get one that runs at 7200 RPM. Also, just do simple things to your computer, like compressing old files, deleting programs that you don't use, and defrag it often.

MAX ur ram out....i can't believe a level six would give that type of answer...low ram creates a bottle neck in ur bios...that means ur processor is restricted from processing mega amounts of programs at the same time it has to take turns letting in and out information the more ram u have to wider the avenue is to let more information in and out of ur processor .....the wider the street the more information it can handle...the more information the faster the machine ...but max out ur ram and machine will run like a scalded dog.... bubba....... guaranteed

RAM is what you need. For example, if you have 256, you should at LEAST double it to 512 with Windows XP running. In thing I've learned about PC's: whatever it says you need...double it.

get extra RAM (at least 512MB for WinXP)
get rid of unused programme that run in back ground
Check if there are any spyware and viruses reside in your PC
P4 1.6 for is still quite ok as some of the newer notebook only run at 1.6 - 1.8 now

Dont run a bunch of crap at once for one thing, the more crap you have running, the less ram you have available!
