Same here, I'm a complete beginner, but I've learnt a little bit over the past few weeks.
For instant, how to check if Windows is genuine or not, at the Microsoft site.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx
And that should answer your question.
If your copy of Windows is genuine, then sorry, this is where I bail out, but why not try a tech help forum like the one below:
http://www.xpforum.co.uk/forums/index.php
These people know what they are doing, are very prompt with answers, and should point you in the right direction.
Good luck with it.

Basically it means that the CD Key you entered when installing windows (or who ever installed your copy) is not recognised as a genuine copy (IE it thinks your using a pirate copy)
If you have a genunie copy of windows you should have a licence somewhere, either on the front of the booklet that came with your windows CD or perhaps a sticker with your windows CD key on it on your Tower...
If your copy of windows is pirated you really should buy a licence key as soon as possible as you are breaking copyright law, if not contact the supplier of your windows OS or computer and ask about the licence. It is not unknown for some disreputable suppliers to supply illegal CD-keys with their systems..
Is this is the case you should report them for ripping you (and Microsoft) off
If your copy of windows is legit then have no fears about contacting microsoft to resolve this problem, as other software on your computer, eg firewalls etc may be blocking the detection process...

"Rysiek" told you right.
However, If you have an illegal version, and can't afford the genuine, for the time being. Spend $20.00 and buy "Webroots Spy Sweeper", it will stop the pop-up from over taking your monitor, and will hold it. Every once in a while, a small pop-up on your lower tray, will say - downloads are ready to install. Say no, and it goes away. You can run this way for a long time. Also remember to undue your Microsoft automatic updating.

Either you have a pirate copy of Windows, or you entered a wrong CD-key.
