Assuming by "address" you mean the hostname, go to Start>Run type cmd if you're using NT, 2000, or XP -- Type command if you're using 95/98(se).
At the command prompt, which should have just popped up all magical-like, type ping "address"
Hit enter.
If you're trying to find your own IP address, bring up the command prompt the same way and type "ipconfig" then hit enter.

You can ping any address from a DOS command prompt, to view active tcp/ip connections to your computer use NETSTAT in the prompt, and to find the ip address of someone connected to your computer you use TRACERT -the identity in the netstat response-
