I suppose that if a person lives on Moon, his life-span decreases becaus time runs faster there relative to Earth. On the otherhand, the life- span on Jupiter increases because time runs slower there relative to Earth. I seek opinions.

time is the parameter that how many moments you have been passed dil ki kitni dhadkane paas ho chiki hain.o my dear friend life time is not absolute quantity ,it is relative. whatever the time with reference to earth is given to you for living here, the same time the God will give you to live on the mars or jupitor by taking reference to mars or jupitor rotational speed. do not worry his life time programme has the scaling system dear you would not get less or more time to live.

Time is the physical manifestation of the universe that prevents all things from occurring at the same instant. This is compared to space as being the physical manifiestation of the universe that prevents everything from happening in the same place.

Time is measured in seconds and the Universe moves from the past into the future at a rate of 1 second per second. Think of the universa as being a giant bubble or balloon. All of space is on the surface of the balloon. And think of the air outside the baloon as the future and the air inside the baloon as the past. As time passes, the baloon inflates and the universe expands.

This analogy is only a 3 dimensional representation of what is essentially a 4 dimensional model, but I hope it helps you understand how time works.

As for why time is unidirectional, the answer to that is that it may not be. Who is to say that going from what is known into what is unknown is "forward". It is just that that is all we have known so we take it all for granted. On the other hand, in another universe (if you suppose such exists) it may be that everyone goes through time knowing what they are going to do next, but never really sure what just happened. (I know my life sometimes seems that way).

As for why that is how our universe operates, it is called "causality". This is the concept that an effect can not precede the cause. (except when running a video backwards)

What is time?
http://searchsmb.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid44_gci552553,00.html
It is a way of marking the passing of events in the interim or interval between "eternity past" and "eternity future"; sort of as though we are in this "bubble" within eternity.

Any definition or equation for time?
How about Einstein's Theory of Relativity?
The concept of passage of time seems dependent upon the observer's point of viewing and the speedat which the observer is moving. (the illustration of whether a person is standing at a railway station or is on a fast train circling the earth; or the illustration of an observer on earth and an observer who leaves earth on a space ship, travellling at nearly the speed of light, and returns after what seems (to the earth-bound observers) as many years but to the observers on the space ship as must a few hours.

Why uni-directional?
Because it is a way of marking the passage of events between the beginning and end of "time" We can not go back.

However, I'm not sure that "time" runs faster on the Moon nor slower on Jupiter ... just that days on Jupiter might be longer than on earth ... more Earth hours between sun-rise and next sun-rise... even in the Arctic, where the "nights are six months long".

Time is just a yardstick that was developed by man in order to help him survive and improve his living situation. We counted the days until the next planting season, then we divided the days into hours, the hours into minutes, the minutes into seconds by adding and subtracting grains of sand and drops of water. The number of hours, minutes, and seconds was an accident. Time's existence is based on man's continued desire to keep track of it. The instant that man stops counting it is the instant that time ceases to exist.

The idea that time has an existence of its own was implanted in the public's mind by early SciFi books and movies based on abstract references and writings by famous scientists.

It's fun to think about time travel but that's all it is. The past no longer exists and the future doesn't exist yet. If you live 80 years on earth, you will live 80 earth years on the moon or Jupiter barring any biological effects from changes in lifestyle, gravity and atmosphere. If you travel at twice the speed of light towards a star 4 light years away, it will take you 2 years to get there and you will be two years older when you arrive. You will not be younger or older than you would have been if you had stayed here on earth.

Physical time is a velocity "c". This particular speed is the basis of our existence. Mass is composed of electromagnetic energy. Because of this, the value of "c" is maintained. Were all the mass of the universe to be converted into its lowest form, everything would become one-dimensional. Time would no longer exist, because time needs dimensional mass to have an existence where it moves at less than the speed of light.

Notice that in E = mc2, and m = E/c2 that the basis of both is that of c2. This is the singular value that forms both mass and energy. Then, notice that the equation for a gravitational field c2 = E/m is the product of energy and mass. It is the common value between them.

There is a short writing "The Problem and Repair of Relativity" found at http://360.yahoo.com/noddarc that describes why this is true. Also, "Magnetism and Gravity" speaks to this issue.

ok, i'll try to explain it simply...

Time is not the same as our perception of time... for instance the clock... We just made the clock according to the Earth's rotational period around the Sun to be more convenient and have some scedule in our everyday living.. On other planets the clock would have a different scale..

But try to understand this...

Time is a fourth dimension, it cannot be seen by us, we can only feel it's effects.. This is Time

It is always there going forward, it hits us every single infinite split of a splitted second.. This is why we age.. Everything has an expiry date and the dimension of Time is there to keep it going in order to maintain balance.. Cells, trees, stars all feel the effect of Time and all act accordingly depending on their relative speed and position in space-time..

I ain't going to mess with Einstein so if he said "time is relative" (like "beauty is in the eye of the beholder?) I'll be careful to say otherwise. But then "Pookie" seems on to something cause when all life ends (give it time) the concept of "time" goes with us, no? And if it doesn't, who's going to be around to say otherwise? Or, will only time tell?

the duration of events and the intervals between them, and to compare the motions of objects. Einstein said 'time' is relative to the observer, meaning unique and diffirent for where your position is in relation to 3 dimensional space.

scientificaly time does not exists, but it is a cocept. it is related to the motion of planates (earth), also during our daily life many events takes place, such as morning breakfast and lunch. these two events took place, so in simple language the difination of time is 'distance between two events is equal to time. When sleeping no event took place so we did not percive time.

time is a dimension.it is the fourth dimension after height, width, length.it is relative to the speed of the matter.that is why universe is four dimension.
