If you have put in a 4-number code for turning it on it'll at least be less easy. Blocking it can only be done through your phone company. But the lock is only on the sim-card, so if the thief/finder puts in another sim, (s)he will be able to use it. Added to that, if you've stored your phonebook on the phone instead of the sim-card, the thief/finder can also read that.

I had to do this a couple of weeks ago when I left my phone in a taxi. I phoned 3 and told them it was lost. I asked them to block the sim card and the phone, so now wherever my phone is, it's totally useless. (I hope!)

Yes, so long as you tell your phone company. Each phone has a unique IMES number which can now be killed over all networks, so even changing the SIM card is useless.

To block a handset you must have the IMEI ( International Mobile Equipment Identifier ) number,
If you have this you can contact your mobile service provider who can black list the handset and block it.
This can not be unblocked unless your service provider does it.

NO unless you have placed a security code on your phone,. and if it doesn't, then you might want to call into the phone company to have your line suspended so you won't be held responsible for any charges incurred to you while that other person had your phone...
