Yes, I believe that there was a creature like a dragon with wings and horns, but I don't know about the fire-breathing. This could be scientifically explained through two glands in the jaws of a reptile that, upon opening the mouth a certain way, spew two different types of liquid that, when joined together, are ignited and burst into flame (watch the movie Reign of Fire, you'll see what I mean). The closest animal to a dragon that ever existed is what's known as the Archeopteryx, a dinosaur with wings and feathers. It looks like a cross between a peacock and a lizard. It's really close to being a dragon, so maybe these people in ancient times discovered the skeletal remains of an Archeopteryx and thought it was some sort of winged beast, a dragon. Or maybe the concept of the dragon stemmed from the belief in a serpent being the embodiment of Satan. Dragons go back way before Jesus, for dragons are mentioned in the bible, specifically in Daniel and Revelations. The dragon is the embodiment of evil and of Satan, according to the Bible. The dragon may be a modified version of the serpent that temtped Eve in the good o'l Garden of Eden. Maybe one of the prophets/authors said, "Eh, we can't reuse the serpent for Revelations, I know! Let's give it winges! Yeah, and let's have it breathe fire, and have horns! Oh, baby, is this gonna sell!" Something along these lines. But my strongest belief is that some ancient race found the skeletal remains of a dinosaur and thought up a dragon, or the dragon is a modified version of the serpent, the embodiment of all evil (read Revelations; it's a short book).

In my opinion they do exist in an era long ago. And I think the new generations of Dragons left are the Komodo for the Land Breathing ones and the Sea Horse, also known in some cultures as Sea dragons.

The book, 'Caverns, cauldrons, and concealed creatures', by Wm. Micheal Mott, deals with this exact question. He has compiled dragon and serpent-people myths from around the globe and has some interesting conclusions of his own. He noticed how a great majority of these stories involve the reptillian being residing with caves or deep inside the earth and how in most accounts they try to aquire our genetic material. They have done this through marriages, kidnapping (damsels), straight out taking our seed and eggs, and other methods. He thinks this is very similar to the current 'alien abduction' ufo phenomena.

Wow couldn't we have some fun if the big fire breathing ones did?!!!

That would soon put a stop to a few racist groups and big mouths in the world as dragons only befriend the pure of heart.

Sadly though, I don't think they do.Unless you are English and old enough to remember Maggie Thatcher at her best or worst dependent on your point of view.

Boy that lady had learnt a few tricks from dragons. I don't know about her not being for turning...She certainly wasn't for burning!

No, they never existed. They are a product of the human imagination, you see them all over the world as we all pretty mch think alike.
The psysiology of a dragon (the european view of them) is impossible, they couldn't fly due to the wing structure and size would not produce enough lift to get them off the ground and if they were big enough the dragon (as depicted in literature in folklore) did not have the pectoral muscles to move a wing of such size, let along fly. I'm not even going to start on fire breathing.

very good question. One of the most prevalent theories is that the various sightings of lake monsters (Loch Ness, Ogopogo, etc.) are in reality dragons. They certainly behave like dragons, and since no one has gotten a good picture of them, or caught one, it is still just a theory, but if they do, and I believe they do, then that is the most likely place to find them. At least as far as european dragons go. As for asian dragons, well they were said to live in lakes AND in clouds so any cloud could be a dragon, and with most dragon species ability to change shape, even someone sitting at their computer answering this questions could be a dragon...

There are Komodo dragons, which are really big lizards, but the only other dragons you are likely to see today are in artworks or in books.
I think the belief in dragons occurred when people tried to explain dinosaur bones they found long ago.

I highly doubt it--they're very large, and when one considers the high premium placed on hunting them, they've probably been hunted to extinction. I'd say it's possible some are in a hibernation state, perhaps.
