-R and +-R are blank and need an appropriate DVD recorder on your computer to record onto. After recording they should play on any appropriate domestic DVD player. -RW amd +RW are re recordable formats and can sometime give problems playing back on a domestic DVD player. Most modern DVD players, even cheap ones, should have no problems playing any format you throw at it nowadays. Usually there is a an indicaton of compatable discs/formats on the front panel. If not there check the instruction manual

DVD-R, it's the cheapest and also one of the most widely accepted, although some DVD players may still only be able to read DVD+R; it's horses for courses, you'll just have to ask what model number their DVD player is and look up what it can read.

depends on the player, so let your relatives supply you with the information. As for image quality, I see no difference.
