"The quest for cosmic justice", by Thomas Sowell is in good read and got me interested in sociology. He puts forth different ideas than most "main stream" sociologists (he is a Ph.D. Economist, so he looks at things differently than Sociologists but since Economics is a social science the book is good), and talks a lot about unintended consequences. You may not agree with some of what he says, but he does try to present his views in a balances manner. Maybe not a good book to start with, but probably good to read early in your studies. I'm a scientist by training, but have recently started studying in the social sciences myself, very interesting, enjoy (and keep an open mind).
