hard to tell, the currie cup teams are essentially the S14 teams with a few others while the Air New Zealand Cup (no longer the NPC) is sonewhat diluted from the S14 because each of the Kiwi S14 teams is split up, so Canterbury for example is not the same as the Crusaders, this means that the talent is slightly more spread out to create more quality sides while the Currie Cup is dominated by a couple of teams, also the new format of the Air New Zealand Cup with the extended playoff system makes things more interesting, therefore I think the Air New Zealand Cup is the tougher competition

As an impartial (Australian) I have to disagree with the trend and say the NPC. Although the Curry Cup is a good competition and the South African forwards are some of the best in the world, the NPC appears to be a much tougher league with an amazing depth pool (as well as being more entertaining to watch), I don't think that the South Africans have the depth that the Kiwis do.

Obviously the best provincial comp as far as saturation of high profile players is the Guiness Premiership in England but that has a lot to do with their ability be able to buy a large bulk of the elite English, French, Irish and Scottish players as well as being a big fat retirement package for the Southern Hemisphere players. In saying that, it doesn't always make for interesting viewing as the games are often stop-start affairs.

Definaitly NPC, even if i'm an South Africain, i watch a lot of NPC or Air New Zealand Cup as it is know from this year on. If you'll just look at the tempo at witch they play the game, it's lightning fast, to tell you the truth, French club rugby is even played at a faster pace than the Currie Cup. The 1 thing that place's the NPC above any other compition in the world though, is their rucking and mauling, it's devistating and brutal, just as it is suppose to be.

roadtrip088 makes the best points here. The Air New Zealand Cup has 14 teams which represent only 5 Super 14 teams.

Not every team is up to Currie cup standard, but as a whole, the Air New Zealand Cup is more robust and tougher than the Currie Cup.

Shame on all of you for spelling the Currie cup wrong, especially the people who claim to be South African *grin*

But seriously, I would have to agree, the level of players really show a huge difference. New Zealand's super 14 sides are very tough but there is just something lacking at the provincial level.
