I guess so far majority goes to "customer is always right" rule....however, depending on the type of job and the circumstances, I feel that you don't have to tolerate any abuse, not even for a customer. A good employer will not allow their employees to be harassed like that.
Try to be professional but if someone is very disrespectful without a valid reason, defend yourself but in a respectful way.

Yes, just because you are working for someone else does not mean you should just sit there and take verbal abuse from someone, I would approach the situation proffesionally still by saying something like "excuse me, I really would rather you would not speak to me this way or say that, it offends me.. and if they do not apologise I would ask them politley to leave the store and to come back when they can treat you properly .. or say that you do not feel comfortable with the name calling and tell the customer that you will ask another person in the store to serve them instead, that's if you have a supervisor or manager around. then I would get them to deal with it...

**** yes. i sell tvs and most of the time the reason theyre calling me an idiot is because they have no idea what theyre talking about. they saw one commerical about plasma tvs and theyre experts on how they work and how to fix them and how to hang them on the walls. on the otherhand, ive taken hours of courses on them and actually done the repairs and installations myself, but what would i know. whenever someone does that to me i just mention something completely over their heads in the most condescending tone possible and walk away

No, but your boss does. If he/she won't then you can choose to defend yourself and then expect to have to find a new job. The good news is there are lots of jobs out there.

what do you mean by 'defend yourself?'
any way you look at it you have to just sit there. The only defense is to look slightly amused at their childish ranting.

certainly you can't tear back into them, or hit 'em or anything.

If you want your job you have to suck it up and take it.

Maybe the poor pr*ck had a particularly bad day and you're the unlucky recipient of their venting.
