They are the basic elements of organic life. However we have only defined the life on Earth. Scientists do beleive that life can originate in a form other than that based on Carbon backbone.
Silicon a close member of the carbon family has similar properties of self bonding n forming covalent bonds with other elemnts. it is very likely to be a potential candidate.
There's much more to unravel n we can only predict. All this only makes us feel what a miniscule part of the universe we are. so limited in our thoughts, knowledge n understanding.........

Probably. Water has unique properties that similar moleculaes lack which makes it ideal for living things. Carbon is the perfect atom for building large molecules. Other molecules just wouldn't do. That's why we have a whole field called organic chemistry, because so many structures can be made based on a carbon atome backbone.

For most of the life forms on earth yes.... but it is not true to all... Science have found out few life form under sea at very high pressure(200 atmosphere) & very hot circumstances (300-400degree C) & at a depth of 10 kms in sea.... these life forms are absolutely different from ours & live on heat & Sulphur emmitted from sea bed volcanic currents. They dont require sun & oxygen for them....
