Planet Earth is kind of like an egg.
There are several layers:
[1] crust (5 ~ 70 km)
[2] mantle: upper & lower (30 ~ 3,000 km)
[3] core: inner & outer (3,000 ~ 6,400 km)
lithosphere = crust + upper mantle
asthenosphere = lower mantle

The deepest natural depression in the crust:
[1] on land: the Dead Sea (418 meters below sea level)
[2] in the ocean: Challenger Deep (10,916 m below sea level)

The deepest man-made holes:
The deepest well is 12,000 meters (Soviet Arctic);
the deepest mine is 3,585 meters (South Africa);
deepest core sample is 1,700 meters (ocean floor)

Since the lower mantle is basically hot, melted rock at temperatures between 6,000 and 10,000 degrees Farenheit, and the pressure is intense enough to create diamonds from carbon, there is no way we are ever going to get there, let alone get through.
