I think the saddest song I have ever heard recently is "You're Ex lover is dead" by Stars. The melody isnt quite sad but the lyrics are vivid and very sad! Its one of the best compositions I have heard from the modern indie music scene.

'What'll I Do', a very beautiful but sad piece:
'...when I'm alone with only dreams of you, what'll I do....

'When I Lost You'
'...I lost the angel who gave me, summer the whole winter thru, I lost the gladness that turned into sadness, when I lost you.

But the saddest is, I agree, 'Taps'.
