actually it doesnt... when you get to the end you have to turn right twice and start heading back the other way

in the beginning, there was everything, but everything was packed into the space of nothing, then it exploded into everything. All the elements we have today did not exist then, they were created in the first few seconds after the Big Bang.
How can the universe go on forever? Because that is all there is. If there was an end to the universe, that would mean there was something on the other side, which there is not.
It does not technically go on forever, because eventually (no matter what direction you go in) you will come back to where you started. However, it would take so long, and space would have changed so much, you would never know it. (Plus we as human's don't have any 'markers' that would tell you where you were, as we could only really recognise our planet, and then if it was the only one like it in infinity).
It is like a big doughnut shape, but one that goes in every direction. Wherever you start, keep going, and keep going a few billion years longer, and you'll get back there.

He heh, you just have to accept, these are questions that no-one knows the answer to.
It is horrible to think about though, because we cannot get our mind round the thought of infinity. And then if the universe is finite, we can't get our heads around the thought of that finite universe being contained in 'nothing', as even 'nothing' has to be something if it can contain something!
Here is an interesting fact. Scientists believe (through something called the red light test - where they bounce infra red light through space or something like that) - that the universe is doubling in size roughly every two seconds. They are guaging this by the fact that things keep moving further and further away in space.
And thus they think that eventually, the reverse will happen, and the universe will start to collapse in on itself, and eventually turn into some sort of super powerful black hole of anti-matter.
It really does make the mind boggle!

The big bang only created the material universe. Some other thing/energy could have preceded it.
Scientist can only theorise on many aspects of the universe so they don't know if it is infinite.

The best thing that you can do here, is understand that our knowlege is limited by two things. Technology (we don't yet have the means to test if it does go on for an infinity), and the limits of the human mind.
We have to accept that there may be things out there too complex for our minds, just as sometimes there are things that are too small for our eyes to see.
The human body evolved for survival on this planet, without influence from the rest of the cosmos. Now that that is within our reach, we will just have to wait for the technology, or our own evolution, or both!

What is forever, and how do you define it? Consider that time as we experience it on earth is not the same everywhere, Einstein's theory of relativity establishes that there is no 'universal time' it is unique and only relevent to the observer. Gravity warps space/time on earth, not to mention it takes hundreds of thousands to millions and billions of years for the light we see in the universe to get here, according to our estimate's of time measurment. For all we know we experience reality in slow motion, the universe may not even exist any longer!

The 5% of the brain thing is an inaccurate percentage, but the myth itself is untrue... we use more of our brain than we think we do

Oooh good Q!
God knows - its too much for us to comprehend and I think if we knew we still wouldn't be sure, because there would be more we didn't know about.
I don't think we're the only life forms...
