Well, we know (can't remember which season) that the "monster" is the Island's 'Defense Mechanism". That's about it.

As far as the smoke, it's a signal from the "Others"; however, I don't believe they've revealed it's significance.

ahh..You remembered. The smoke I can understand, despite my lack of a theory. (Probably some kind of intraisland signal.). But that wotsit has been totally forgotten. The co-pilot wasn't wearing chain mail, was he? So, how did he end up in pieces in the trees?

it is a tv programme produced to entertain its viewers.

the writers only made a few series but because of its popularity they have had to extend the plot, i believe at this time the people involved in making lost don’t even know what’s going on.

they just know how its going to end.

saying that, love it big fan.

black smoke is the others... at the moment. and the invisible wotsit is the islands defensives, to what we don’t know yet.
