Is this just the begining of the human race's civilisation or are we near the end?

In 1 thousand years time will we be spread throughout the galaxy, perhaps universe and look backk on todays times as we look now upon Romans, Normans etc. Or, are we killing ourselves faster than we can come up with solutions, will time run out for us, will we destroy the planet, our life support system? Are the stars really our future or is it imprisonment on a ruined, overheated and resourcefully drained planet, Earth?

We are in a state of historical flux. According to legend, the Chinese word for "Crisis" is comprised of two words -- "Danger" and "Opportunity."

Think about it. When everything is up in the air, it is both a golden opprtunity for re-birth, or a disaster waiting to happen. There is no final answer to your most excellent question. The future is ours to make OR break -- right here -- and right now.

So the important question becomes what can each of us do to ensure that the sun we see on the horizon is rising and not setting.

There's a chance of either but in my opinion taken from history -- we have chosen the walk of doom. Every 50 years there has been at least 1 major war. Now when you bring nuclear weapons into the picture (which have only been around for a little over 60) you have a recipe for diaster. It's only a matter of time before countries like Iran obtain nukes and when that happens, it's chaos.

Sure we could probably resolve it without wiping everyone out, but then you still have asteroids of death that scientists are always predicting will exterminate all life on earth. Mix that with raipid changing enviroments and conditions and the chance for survival for the next 1000 years is slim.

It's a race. If we can obtain the technology to venture out into space and live there then humankind will be saved. But playing politics and worrying about other issues only draws us closer to our demise.

Empires expand into fertile lands, destroying communities as they go. Maybe there are many other earths, but I can't see any human seriously trying to conquer them, unless a new telescope could let us see a million times further than hubble to gather intelligence. So, basically, we're stuck with Earth, which boasts many fine civilizations, housing the housed classes, protected from the barbarian chariot riders by armies and walls, just like the old days, except here's so many more varieties of human organization these days. Rome will continue to do battle with Boudica and other small fry warladies/lords, while the people live happily ever after... in heaven, where Caesar and Bodicea are best buddies.
Peace and happiness to you.

Great question. I think we are in the middle of our existance. Eventually the human race will die out as the earth and sun will not be around forever. I dare say an elite few will end up colonising other planets. However I think our biggest concern at the moment is much closer to home. I think it is the beginning of the end of Western dominance on Earth unless G Bush is booted out and his evil ways are replaced by a more inteligent form of government. His attitude stinks and his stupid actions may cause the likes of China or Iran to become dominant powers in the world. Get him out NOW.

According to the Bhagavad Gita we are living in The Kalyug, which is the last of the four periods of human existence. Looking at the world scenario of today's everything is going to end one day. People are fighting and killing each other. And apart from that humans have really played with the nature, resulting in the imbalance in the ecosystem which will ultimately result in the end of the world.
What we need here is someone trying to preach people to have patience and composure and a non violent attitude which will ensure in peace and harmony.

We are near the end of civilization and it can be proved!

Suppose you've got a bag with 11 balls in it, 10 red and 1 blue. You start drawing balls one-by-one. It would not be too surprising if the blue ball appeared at the 5th or 6th draw. Now take a bigger bag with 10,000,000,000 red balls and still only 1 blue ball. Now it would be very surprising if the blue ball came out early, or even half-way through. We would expect it to come out somewhere very near the end because it is nearly always overwhelmingly more likely to choose a red ball.

Now, here's the switch. Let the red balls represent the lives of every person who has ever lived, or will ever live. And let the blue ball represent one particular person. You, or me, for example. By the time the particular person is 'drawn' (born), it is much more likely that there aren't very many red balls (other people) left to be born. So, we are near the end of human civilization, indeed near the end of human existence.

This is reputable statistical logic. It is called Bayesian Inference.

If we are being realistic, we would know that man has continually depleted the earths resources for many years. Very little has been constructively returned to the earth to be replenished. Man will always be reliant upon others for support of one kind or another. Until man is able to become self sustaining and is able to help others do the same without over use of the earths resources, man will forever be in decline.

According to the Bible, the end of human race and the end of the world are close. According to science, we are at the dawn. In the next 1000 years, the Sun will grow so much and it will burn the Earth and the human race will move to Mars. We will create a suitable oxygene atmosphere using a bacteria which produces oxygene, originally from Texas.

Has to be the dawn. Met anyone civilised lately? Can you give me the name of a civilised country?
Be an optimist - it can only get better. Even Bush admitted to secret prisons. There may still be human rights somewhere. This is the age of Aquarius!?
