Because our culture has been brainwashed by the media to attach more importance to fame than to service to others. (One more reason I do not own a TV.)

B/c those people are entertaining and people want entertainment more than essentials or good health or whatever. Is it stupid, totally! Example: B/c Peyton Manning throws a football and wins a few games for the Colts, we have to build the Colts a new stadium in Indianapolis when we can't even fill the old one and when Indiana's education system is in a huge rut. What! The money hoosiers spent on the stadium could have made our school system better and done better things for Indiana than a stupid stadium for a dumb guy. But people want entertainment, so they get it instead of better schools or whatever. It blows.

Because people pay their money to watch them do what they do.
If there wasn't a massive market out there for athletes and entertainers, they wouldn't be compensated so well.
No one forces anyone to be a teacher or police officer, they know the pay scale and responsibilities going in. If they do not like the job or the pay, they can go find something else to do.

because it boils down to money brought in. People are paid for the income the generate. If I own a school, a teacher doesn't make me money. If I own a pro sports team, The athelete generates millions of dollars in tickets and jersey sales or shoe sales. It doesn't seem right, but that is what makes the world go round. The moral is learn to play a sport very well!

I am applying to be a police officer at many differant agencies, now that I have my degree. I am not doing it for the money, like athletes do. The money would be nice, but I think it would attract the wrong type of person into being an officer or a teacher.

If you could fill a stadium in which ppl would pay 50 euros or dollars to watch a teachers lecture.. then maybe they could make the same as the athletes!

becuase a much smaller percentage of people can be a proffesional athlete than be a teacher or policeman. i agree, its whack, but think of it this way. anyone who puts their mind to it and decides they want to be a teacher, will succede. it is not the same for pro sports.
