Don't justify anything because different places sell different
prices. As for me, I would ask for a glass of water instead of the
soda.

Restaurants can sell a glass of soda for $5.00 because, first off, in most restaurants you get refills, an it covers the cost of what you drink. Second, the cost of the transportation of the syrup is added, the wages, a company to come in to deliver the CO2 (carbonation).and profit. Some people will drink 5-7 glasses of soda an the cost per glass is going to be about .75 cents. Where others will only have 2 and that may be 1.25 or more a glass. So it averages out in the end.

They justify it by claiming that the $5 pays for the ambience, the glass, the waiter serving you, the glass being washed, etc. People pay it, the market economy bears that price.
If people didn't pay for the item and order the item when it is so overpriced, the restaurants would stop charging so much!

Restaurants have to make a profit somehow. You also more than likely get refills with that soda, but if you don't want to pay for it, order water.

1) Where I live, you can't get a bottle of coke for less than 1.29
2) I have never seen a glass of coke on a menu for more than 2.00
3) Usually in a restaurant, you get free refills. You could drink a gallon of coke if you wanted!

it's free enterprise....they need to make money! You're obviously there to spend money...go a little further and buy a nice glass of wine. Don't waste a good meal with a soda!!!

Because there is usually a mortgage to pay. There is insurance, the electric bill, the gas bill, health permits, employee wages, taxes, maintenance-building and equipment, different licenses, and more things than you can possibly imagine that have to be paid for.

I would say it's probably easier for them to do that than to add to the bill every time someone wants a drink refill.
